Sean Power is a startup advisor, internationally published author, speaker, marketing and data science geek. He is currently Data Scientist in Residence at Cheezburger and Director of Marketing & Conference Co-Chair for the Decibel International Electronic Music Festival in Seattle. He advises early stage startups, with a particular focus on the intersection of music & technology. If you’re a music startup, he wants to talk to you.
The Short Story
Sean Power is a startup advisor, internationally published author and marketer which means he rarely gets sleep.
He is the co-founder of Watching Websites, a boutique consulting firm helping startups, VCs and incubators overcome issues and accelerate their businesses through customer development and measurement. His company highlights include working closely with and/or advising companies such as Akoha (launched at TechCrunch 50 and TED), PostRank (acquired by Google), CoTweet (acquired by ExactTarget), WebTrends, Cheezburger, Dishcrawl, The New Hive, KISSmetrics and awe.sm. He was involved for a number of years with Coradiant (acquired by BMC in 2011 for $130 million). Prior to that, he led the online marketing & social media efforts at MTV Northern Europe.
His core areas of expertise lay within:
- Marketing - answering “OK. We’ve created a product. How do we get this thing out the door?”
- Monetization – answering “We built this thing. Think we can make money from it? How?”
- Finding Product / Market Fit – answering “How can we tell if our customers really resonate with what we built for them?”
- Growth – answering “We’re ready to go big. How do we go about doing this?”
He co-authored Web Operations (O’Reilly 2010), Complete Web Monitoring (O’Reilly 2009) and was technical editor for Troubleshooting Linux Firewall for Addison-Wesley. Complete Web Monitoring has been translated into three languages – none of which he speaks. He has been a speaker and moderator on metrics, products or startups at Bitnorth, eMetrics, Engage, Enterprise 2.0, Podcamp, ProductCamp, Web 2.0 Expo, Velocity, Webcom and Web 2.0 Expo and has been a repeat guest lecturer at McGill University in Montreal.
